The course material and layout of the BGS ATPdigital App is brilliant. It is really easy to navigate, and I like the format of a group of lessons followed by a progress test, then another group of lessons followed by a progress test. It really keeps you on with where you are up to. 

BGS was great with their own material and question banks as I was doing their distance learning ATPL(A) course.

Their CBT is great as it covers each of the subjects in great detail whilst also prioritising the material according to the learning objectives for the exams.

The videos on each of the subjects also really helps to reinforce anything you have learnt from the CBT. Most subjects are covered in them and I believe the rest that aren’t, will be done shortly.

Furthermore they also have revision weeks for each of the modules which need to be done before you can sit each of the exams, which extensively cover all the material in summary to refresh anything that you may have forgotten leading up to the exams.

Overall I would recommend BGS to anyone doing the modular route as it allows flexibility whilst also providing proper teaching and guidance through emails whenever necessary.

From start to finish, Bristol Groundschool is a fantastic school to do ATPL’s with. The course material is easy to use, very well explained and thought of. The brush up courses though are the best thing about Bristol. You meet great people and are taught by knowledgeable and interesting instructors.

There were times I would study at home for hours not understanding something, then at the brush up, the amazing instructors would have me understanding it in half an hour.  Above all, the support Bristol give through a very hard course is wonderful, there is always someone there to help should you, if you need it.

I was fortunate to be awarded a British Women Pilots’ Association scholarship sponsored by BGS, which covered half the cost of the ATPL(A) distance learning course.

Balancing full-time work alongside my studies was challenging, particularly with a few unexpected life events along the way. However, my role as an aircraft engineer allowed me to physically work with systems and avionics, which greatly supported my understanding of the material.

The Video Library was an invaluable resource, especially in the lead-up to exams, helping to reinforce key formulas and the most efficient approaches to multistage calculations. The instructors were consistently supportive, encouraging questions and responding quickly to emails when further clarification was needed. Their varied career backgrounds and real-world experience brought the subjects to life and helped demonstrate how the knowledge applies in practice.

Having the ATPdigital App accessible via an iPad made studying on the go incredibly convenient, and I took full advantage of this. The computer-based training was also great for planning my studies, helping me set target dates for each module and monitor my progress day by day.

I made the most of my time with BGS and have since utilised Wings Alliance, which has provided ongoing support as I work towards completing my flight training.

Just completed my ATPL(H)/IR course. I came for the best price but got much more than that. The staff was incredibly accommodating, the CBT was convenient, and most of all the instructors were top notch. Especially, Chris Keane, if you get him for any of the subjects, you’re in for a good time – he’s one of those people that can make any subject interesting, no matter how dry it is. The revision weeks are easy to plan around so long as you are committed and provide a very comprehensive overview of the most necessary information to successfully sit your exams (I sat them at a non-Austro control EASA examination centre). It took me just over half a year to get it done. All in all, 10/10 would and do recommend!

In August 2026, after 18 months of study, I completed my UK CAA ATPL(A) theoretical training with Bristol Groundschool, passing all 13 examinations at the first attempt with an overall average of 98.3%, including eight scores of 100%.

Studying alongside full-time work was a substantial commitment and demanded consistency over a long period. BGS’s courseware and progress testing gave me clear structure and reassurance, while preserving the flexibility I needed to fit my studies around the rest of my life.

The course material is comprehensive, clearly presented and designed to develop a proper understanding rather than simply prepare students to pass examinations. The combination of self-study content, recorded webinars and classroom revision weeks worked extremely well, making even the more challenging—or occasionally eccentric—exam questions much easier to approach. That said, I fear I may never look at grapes bought in a tropical market quite the same way again.

The revision weeks were a particular highlight. The instructors’ knowledge, patience, humour and real-world experience brought difficult—and occasionally very dry—subjects to life, while providing welcome human connection during what might otherwise have been a fairly solitary 18 months.

That personal approach extended to the whole BGS team. Whenever I needed help, I received a friendly and helpful response. A special mention must go to Henry Blight: there was a real sense of camaraderie in knowing that the person helping me navigate exam bookings and the inevitable stresses surrounding them was also working through his own ATPLs.

Since sharing my results, I have received many kind messages of congratulations, along with questions from other students about how best to tackle the ATPLs. My advice has been consistent: a methodical approach, sustained effort and a willingness to ask questions are essential—but so is choosing a course that directs that effort effectively. BGS provided the structure, teaching and support that allowed me to do that.

Completing the ATPL theory was undoubtedly the most demanding stage of my training so far, but it was also enormously rewarding. It has given me a firm theoretical foundation as I move into the practical stages of my training. I remain genuinely grateful to everyone at Bristol Groundschool and would recommend BGS without hesitation to anyone beginning their ATPL studies.

I started with BGS at the end of 2023 and 11 months later, I can happily say I passed all 13 ATPL exams first time while balancing a multitude of other responsibilities.

ATPLs can be daunting and challenging, especially for distance learning, however, BGS give everything necessary to pass with great results.

Bristol Ground School manages to balance the fine line between both making the theory practically relevant and preparing you for the exams (which aren’t always practically relevant).

I’ve worked many years designing online training and can happily say that Bristol Ground School has a very efficient and pedagogical approach to you getting through your ATPL studies.

My experience at BGS has been excellent – the scope of the ATPLs is so vast but the course is broken down into manageable chunks through the CBT and the way BGS split the modules. I found the video library particularly useful for lots of the subjects and actually preferred those video lessons than the CBT in a lot of cases. I also found ATPdigital a great piece of software, no complaints from me there.

The revision weeks I found really good too – I attended all of them online due to living in Manchester, but I found the trainers engaging and actively getting the students involved. In hindsight I think attending at least one of the revision weeks in person might have been good for me, as I think classroom teaching can’t really be beaten by online. Face to face engagement with the trainer and other students can’t be replicated online. But as I say, the quality of the online teaching was very good and I have no complaints at all.

Finally one to mention – I’ve emailed the guys in the office multiple times and always had a very quick and helpful responses, so thanks for that. Some places take forever to respond but these guys are very fast. Keep it up!

Having finally completed the UK CAA ATPL(A) exams following 15 months of pretty intense academic training with BGS there is nobody else I would recommend trusting with their theoretical training. From the instructors to the admin staff and tech support, the entire team deliver first class training and support to get you through the course. The combination of online tuition, in person instruction and their question bank as well as the addition of the new AI tutor means that however you learn you will be successful. The instructors in particular have a superb way of making the daunting prospect of embarking on the ATPL theory journey far less intimidating than it is. I am confident I would not have passed the exams with a 91% average if I had gone anywhere else to study.

I found the course material was pitched perfectly, the presentation (both ATP Digital and textbooks) was excellent and the interactions with teaching and support staff has been both prompt and useful so thank you to everyone there. It was a difficult and pressured situation for me, where I had completed my Air law very early before my A-Levels began, which allowed the 18-month clock to start ticking. After shifting my focus to A-Levels, I had 3 months to learn and take 8 of the exams. It is now safe to say that I have now officially completed all the exams with 7 days to spare thanks to BGS.

From the start, the team at BGS was helpful and patient as I downloaded all that I needed to study for my PPL A. I had reason to call them on occasions and my queries were responded to quickly and efficiently. Bristol Groundschool (BGS) has proven to be an outstanding provider for me, and I would wholeheartedly recommend them to any pilots pursuing their ATPLs. As a midlife career changer and after initially enrolling at one of the larger integrated flight schools I found their delivery lacking and rushed.  Switching to BGS for distance learning was the best decision I made. I was working a demanding full-time job during my initial training and needed a school that would meet my needs and provide me with the support to overcome any difficulties, as well as space to work at my own pace. The whole experience with Bristol Groundschool has been fantastic. They go above and beyond the excellent theory training they provide.

The training material BGS has produced is very high quality, with plenty of schematics and diagrams to help with more difficult topics. Each of the instructors knows their subject(s) inside and out, and they are always happy to spend extra time answering queries.

It is clear that BGS wants to produce candidates who have a good understanding of the ATPL subjects, which certainly helps when it comes to practical flight training.

I do recall the ATPL theory as a demanding but very interesting module of my student pilot program, as you get to explore all the hidden details that make this industry unique. Bristol Groundschool delivered quality training in a very efficient way that allowed me to sit the exams with confidence.

The BGS instructors inspired me so much that, while waiting for a position in an airline, I started teaching Private Pilot subjects as a TKI in a local flying club. I completed the IR theoretical course With BGS. I was very happy with the study materials. The instructors have a very good knowledge of the subjects and they help with any problem you may have.

The exams question bank is up-to-date and the correct answers well illustrated. I could say that half of the knowledge you need to know is in the answers of the question bank. Very good job from the BGS team to be aware of how and what the Authorities are demanding, and be able to put you on the correct path.

The recorded webinars are really useful to grab the tricky concepts and put them into your active and available memory. The brush-up revision weeks before the exams are a perfect way to fix those lost items here and there.

I chose the modular route as I have a full time demanding job. Flexibility and distance learning was key for me.

I did a fair amount of research before choosing Bristol Ground School. The time and effort you invest in studying and succeeding is significant. Choosing the right school is a key. I can honestly say this has been one of the best decisions I have made.

The whole process from signing up and receiving log in details was fast and straightforward. The online platform with detailed teaching material, explanations and animations along with regular progress checks and tests really does help build your knowledge.

The revision weeks at the end of each module were a particular highlight as these significantly help consolidate knowledge and prepare you for the exams. Covid meant the last revision week for me was online. I was surprised at how well this worked, with a high level of engagement and participation in a virtual classroom.

So what did I learn throughout the process?

There are no short cuts in this. You really do need to learn your stuff AND practice using various question banks. The banks compliment your learning and help with question styles etc…but you need to know your stuff. I used a variety of question banks but found BGS to offer the most comprehensive worked and explained answers to questions. (It doesn’t help if you get a question wrong…but don’t understand why!)

From my experience, what has set BGS apart is the quality and dedication of the staff at every level, from administration to teaching. The subject leaders are seasoned pros (All are current or former pilots and engineers) who have a passion for their subject matter and an equal passion to impart knowledge and prepare you for the exams.

Make no mistakes, I found the exams tough going…but that’s because they are tough. That said, with an average mark of 91%, dedication and hard work pays off. What has made the difference for me has been the quality of the teaching material and the outstanding team who have supported and guided me throughout. Their passion is infectious!

If you are planning to invest in doing your ATPL exams, I cannot recommend BGS more highly.

I started my PPL (H) in Switzerland in 2017. After I passed all the exams, I flew a lot with my friends and my family. I did my mountain rating and built my hours until I was able to begin my ATPL theory and practical CPL. I started the first course in January 2020. I was really motivated to work with the BGS app and books. The courses are complete with animations and pictures to help perfectly understand the topics. That was the beginning of a stressful period. I wasn’t sure if it will be possible to continue further with BGS, or if it will be possible to go to Bristol for the in person learning… thankfully, the whole team make a huge effort so remote learning would work for us. Everything went perfectly well. I did the whole ATPL in distance learning from my home. I did my examinations with AustroControl in Innsbruck, the closest place from my home.

Since the Covid-19 outbreak BGS has been very much on the ball and has switched their revision weeks online which has allowed me to continue studying.  They have now launched a completely online course which I think is a great way forward. It provides students with maximum flexibility to train, at a time that best suits them.  The learning material is excellent and the online webinars and revision weeks are run really well and are great for learning the subjects and building confidence prior to the exams.

As I am taking Austro exams its very reassuring to see that exams are already taking place at BGS again. Bristol were the last ATO offering exams before lock down and the first to restart.

Bristol Groundschool has an awesome team, I wouldn’t have chosen any other school to study my ATPL theory with. I managed to average 94% on my ATPLs, all with first-time passes. A testament to how well you teach and support your students!

When I was looking for a ground school to do my ATPL(A), many people told me I should really consider BGS, and they were absolutely right!

It turned out that I started the process just before the start of the COVID 19 pandemic.

The Bristol Groundschool webinars are second to none. The development of the distance learning model for ATPLs to a hybrid between integrated and distance learning has really filled a gap in the market.

Being able to access and learn the complete course in such a flexible and user friendly way has been crucial for me, whilst trying to balance a 60 hour working week, 2 children and a partner at university! Thank you BGS, I will be forever in your debt.

I would recommend Bristol GroundSchool with closed eyes. I had heard great things about the school and I wasn’t disappointed.

Not only does the school provide a great platform to learn, great learning material and fantastic instructors, but it also provides great support and help. I was at the time transferring my French medical to a UK one, and Noush and the whole team helped me a lot with the transfer and the problems that arose.

The way I see it, if you want to do your ATPL theory in distance learning, in English, then BGS is THE way to go.

The new completely online training option at Bristol Groundschool is a great choice for students.

It provides you with maximum flexibility to study around your family and work commitments and you don’t need to travel and incur those extra expenses.

Bristol were the last ATO offering exams before lock-down and the first to restart.

Without the webinars, online revision courses and help from fantastic instructors I would never have done so well in my exams. With their help, I finished my ATPL’s on the first sitting when BGS re-opened.

I have now completed my studies, all whilst working full-time in Flight Operations. Well done BGS for leading the way again.

I spent a long time researching online EASA ATPL ground schools. I know that there are a number of good ATOs, but your prices were just more competitive for the same quality or even better and I chose Bristol Groundschool for many reasons but particularly being able to study 100% online.

I attended a Bristol Groundschool online revision week and wondered how it would be. I anticipated problems with poor quality streaming or getting distracted as I was studying at home but I was surprised to find myself totally ‘in the zone’. I am self employed and the new online course has allowed me to study around my work, in my spare time.

I am delighted I can complete my course online, I much prefer this, than to go back to tuition in the classroom, particularly as it has saved me a considerable amount of money and travelling time and the instruction is equally as good.

I couldn’t recommend more Bristol Groundschool, thanks to them and their amazing team I managed to convert my ICAO ATPL to an EASA ATPL in the best conditions possible.

The process started with contacting their team (special thanks to George) who guided me to exactly what I needed to do and what study materials was needed.

I enrolled in their “Licence Conversion Courses” which includes everything required to pass the exams.

The best part of it was their application ATPdigital who has all the 14 subjects, chapter by chapter, with questions at the end of each class to make sure you understood the main points, it was like having my private teacher anytime anywhere (it even work without wifi!). The printed materials are very high quality with good images throughout. It made them easy to read and, even for a non-physics / maths type like me, accessible and understandable. Whilst travelling being able to access the course on the iPad or laptop was equally easy.

Whilst most study is distance learning; the face-to-face tuition is first class. The Accelerator weekends that BGS runs for the trickier subjects are to be highly recommended.

Bristol Groundschool’s team of instructors are very engaging, mostly ex-military, with good stories that bring subjects to life and lighten the drier elements of any course.

They genuinely care about their students, are accessible via phone/ email if there are any questions and it makes for a good atmosphere and learning environment. The revision weeks are also brilliant: everyone teaching really knows their stuff.

I never thought I would have fond memories of the ATPL theory exams, but I can honestly say, I had the best time!
