Alex Whittingham has played an instrumental role in shaping professional pilot training. With more than three decades of commitment to aviation education, he has revolutionised modular theoretical knowledge training, making high-quality ATPL theory courses accessible to aspiring pilots worldwide.

His contributions include pioneering computer-based training and establishing the BGS Question Bank, now a critical resource for pilots and flight schools globally. Through his leadership, BGS has trained over 22,000 professional pilots, many of whom have gone on to fly for leading airlines, including EasyJet, Jet2, British Airways, Emirates, and Lufthansa.

Beyond training innovations, Alex has shown outstanding dedication to students affected by the sudden closure of their flight schools, providing free ATPL courses to ensure their careers remained on track. His efforts during the COVID-19 pandemic further demonstrated his commitment, transitioning BGS to fully online operations without compromising quality.

Recognised as a leading advocate for aviation training, Alex’s expertise is frequently sought by industry regulators, including EASA and the UK CAA. His work has directly influenced training standards across Europe, cementing his reputation as a visionary in aviation education.

Ben Powell: A Champion of Modular Pilot Training

Ben Powell, a Senior First Officer at Jet2.com and former BGS student, has been an exceptional advocate for modular pilot training. As one of three finalists in the Best Modular ATPL Student category, Ben’s achievements highlight the strength and flexibility of the modular training pathway.

Ben completed his ATPL training at BGS with outstanding results, securing his first airline role at Flybe within just seven days of finishing his training. His career progression to Jet2.com exemplifies the success achievable through modular training.

Beyond his personal accomplishments, Ben has dedicated significant time to supporting aspiring pilots. He has actively participated in industry events such as Pilot Careers Live, sharing insights on modular training and mentoring students through social media and in-person engagements. His efforts in dispelling myths about the modular route and promoting its benefits have been widely recognised within the aviation community.

Anthony Petterford one of the judges of the award said: “From me and all of the judges, one thing about Alex has always stood out—regardless of any persuasion or pressure, he has remained steadfast in his commitment to doing the right thing. He has consistently offered the right advice, always putting the interests of the student first.

“For over 30 years, Alex has been a source of wise counsel in pilot training, shaping the industry with integrity and dedication. It is with great pleasure that we recognise him tonight as a truly worthy winner of this award.”

Commenting on the success, Alex Whittingham said:
“It is a tremendous honour to receive this award. At BGS, we are committed to providing world-class training to help aspiring pilots achieve their dreams. Seeing our graduates, like Ben Powell, excel in their careers is incredibly rewarding.”

The recognition of both Alex and Ben at the Pilot Careers Live Awards underscores BGS’s commitment to excellence and innovation in pilot training.
