Embarking on a journey to become a pilot is an exhilarating endeavour, and choosing the right training path is crucial. One approach that has gained significant popularity in recent years is the modular approach to flight training. Understanding Modular Flight Training
Modular flight training is essentially a “building block” approach to becoming a pilot. Instead of following a traditional integrated program that progresses from zero experience to a fully-fledged pilot’s licence in one continuous course, modular training breaks the process into distinct modules or phases.
The Building Blocks: Modules Defined
Private Pilot Licence (PPL)
The foundational module is where aspiring pilots acquire the basic skills and knowledge required to operate an aircraft. It covers areas like flight manoeuvres, navigation, and aeronautical regulations. This flight training course entails a minimum of 45 hours of flight training, of which 10 hours minimum must be solo flying. 9 theoretical written examinations must be passed before the skill test, and a radio telephony verbal test must also be passed.
ATPL Theoretical knowledge training:
Before you can start your commercial/advanced flight training courses, you must complete an approved Airline Transport Pilot’s Licence (ATPL) theoretical course. And pass 13 theoretical knowledge tests. There is a minimum study hour requirement of 650 hours. You can either complete this element of training part-time or full-time via distance learning, or full-time in a classroom with a training provider that offers this.
Hour Building
Following the PPL, students often accumulate a set number of flying hours to enhance their practical experience and confidence in the cockpit. The minimum number of hours a student pilot must build before starting a CPL course is 150 hours, of which 100 hours must be Pilot in Command (PIC). The hours accumulated from the PPL can be credited to the total number of hours. This phase serves as a bridge between the basic skills acquired during the PPL and the more advanced aspects of training.
Instrument Rating (IR)
This module focuses on developing a pilot’s ability to fly solely using instruments. It’s a crucial step for those aiming to navigate through challenging weather conditions and enhance their overall piloting skills. The course entails 55 hours of training, of which 40 can be conducted in a fixed base flight training simulator. If you intend to work for an airline, you will need to complete your IR training in a multi-engine aircraft, to obtain a “Multi-Engine Instrument Rating” (MEIR). Before starting the MEIR, you will need to complete a 6-hour Multi-Engine Piston (MEP) course as a prerequisite. At least 70 hours of PIC are required before you can start the MEIR course.
Commercial Pilot Licence (CPL)
Building on the foundation of the PPL, the CPL module refines a pilot’s skills to a commercial standard. It introduces advanced flight manoeuvres, emergency procedures, and more complex navigation tasks. Traditionally, the CPL course mandates 25 hours of flight training before the test, however, if an IR rating course is passed before starting the CPL course, 10 hours of the 25 flight hours are credited from the IR training, resulting in a 15-hour CPL course.
Upset Prevention Recovery Training (UPRT)
The purpose of the UPRT course is to understand how to cope with the physiological and psychological aspects of dynamic upsets in aeroplanes, and to develop the necessary competence and resilience to be able to apply appropriate recovery techniques during upsets. Where possible, the recovery techniques used during the course will be compatible with techniques typically used for transport category aeroplanes. It consists of 5 hours of theoretical training and 3 hours minimum of practical training in an aerobatic aircraft.
Airline Pilot Standards Multi-Crew Cooperation (APS MCC) course
Before you complete your first multi-crew aircraft type rating, you must complete at least an MCC (Multi-Crew Cooperation) course. The standard preferred, and in most cases, only accepted by many airlines, is referred to as an Airline Pilot Standards Multi-Crew Cooperation (APS MCC) course. The purpose of an APS MCC course is to transition from single-pilot flying to flying in a multi-crew environment (i.e., with a captain and first officer), hence the term Multi-Crew. The minimum hour requirement for an APS MCC course is 40 hours which will usually be split into 20 hours as Pilot Flying, and 20 hours as Pilot Monitoring.
