In this series of blogs, we hear from Bristol Groundschool students about their time studying with us, why they chose to become a pilot and what they’ve gone on to achieve since gaining their ATPL/CPL.
Chris Ede recently completed his ATPL(A) theory with Bristol Groundschool. Chris has just secured a job with British Airways, flying the A320 out of Heathrow Airport.
Here he shares his thoughts on modular training and some advice to future students.
What made you choose the modular route over integrated?
Before starting I wanted to make sure I gathered as much research as possible for potential routes and ways to train, ultimately it came down to cost. I did not have the funds to hand a school one lumped some of money. However, on reflection, I would follow the same route again. Modular puts you in control of who you train with and when you want to train and gave me ample time to really experience the joys of hour-building and discover new airfields.
Would you recommend BGS for their ATPL study, and why?
While the course was distance learning and required me to push myself continuously to achieve results. I found the course content, the revision packs, and the training weeks more than suitable for me and the flexibility of the course aligned perfectly with the idea of maintaining control of your training. I would always recommend Bristol Ground School to future pilots completing the modular route, Alex Whittingham and all the instructors are a fountain of experience and stories.
Which flight training providers did you complete your training with?
I completed my PPL at Synergy Flight Centre based at Fairoaks, then moved to Blackbushe to hour build while I carried out my ATPL studies with BGS. When I had accrued the hours and passed the exams I started at FTA for a few months before they went into administration. I eventually finished my advanced training with Blackbushe Aviation and completed my APS MCC at VA Airline Training on the A320.
What advice would you give to other budding modular students from your experience?
The most experienced pilots were once in the same position you find yourself in. The journey to the end goal is challenging, at times you may self-doubt yourself and only see a mountain that you cannot pass, I know I felt this at times. But the bonus of going the modular route means you can take each stage when you are ready, one step at a time. With each step, you become closer to the end goal and you will question what you were worrying about in the beginning. It is not a race, go at a pace that suits you and your situation. If you ever feel lost or bogged down and struggling, reach out! The aviation community is far and wide, use social media channels to your advantage to talk with like-minded individuals, who are at similar stages; join Wings Alliance who can help to provide advice and pilot network when you can. I have met many pilots over the years in similar circumstances who I now call friends. Finally, do not forget to enjoy the journey, you are going to have some incredible experiences throughout your training!
