Over the past few months, pilots flying in and out of New Delhi have been dealing with something that really shouldn’t be happening in modern aviation: people on the ground shining laser beams directly at aircraft during take-off and landing.
It might sound minor. It isn’t.
Laser strikes are becoming more frequent, and they’re happening at exactly the worst possible moments – when aircraft are low, slow, and pilots have very little room for error.
What actually happens in the cockpit
When a laser hits the cockpit, it’s not just a quick flash of light. High-powered lasers can cause temporary blindness, intense glare, or lingering after-images that don’t disappear when the beam stops.
If that happens at cruising altitude, it’s a serious distraction. If it happens on short final or just after take-off, it’s dangerous.
Pilots rely heavily on visual cues during these phases of flight: runway lighting, markings, alignment, terrain, and other traffic. Losing clear vision for even a few seconds massively increases workload at a time when there’s already a lot going on.
And it’s not just eyesight. Lasers can reflect off cockpit glass and displays, making instruments harder to read. Add that into a busy airspace like Delhi’s, and the risk compounds very quickly.
Why this keeps happening
Part of the problem is enforcement.
Laser strikes usually happen at night and often from densely populated areas. By the time authorities are alerted, the person responsible is long gone. Arrests are rare, prosecutions even rarer, which means there’s very little deterrent.
In some cases, lasers are used during celebrations, festivals, or weddings, with no awareness that an aircraft is seconds away from landing overhead. From the ground, it might feel distant. From the cockpit, it’s anything but.
This isn’t a harmless prank
There’s still a worrying gap between how serious this actually is and how it’s perceived.
Shining a laser at an aircraft is treated internationally as a serious aviation offence. It can end flights, trigger safety reports, and in extreme cases contribute to accidents. Repeated exposure can even cause long-term eye damage for pilots, potentially affecting their ability to fly at all.
That’s not “messing around”. That’s interfering with a safety-critical system.
What needs to change
If this issue is going to be tackled properly, a few things need to happen:
- Clearer, stronger enforcement, and visible consequences
- Better public awareness around what laser strikes actually do
- Tighter controls on high-powered laser sales
- Faster coordination between aviation authorities and local police
Aviation safety doesn’t stop at the airport fence. What happens on the ground matters too.
The bottom line
Flying is still incredibly safe, but that safety is built on layers of protection and shared responsibility. Laser strikes punch holes straight through those layers for no good reason.
A beam of light from the ground might look harmless. In the cockpit, it can mean sudden blindness at a few hundred feet above the runway.
And that’s a risk nobody should be taking.
