In this blog post, we will discuss the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) and UK theoretical knowledge requirements for obtaining a Private Pilot Licence (PPL). This will include an overview of the regulatory framework and practical advice on how to approach your studies.

Why Theoretical Knowledge is Essential

The most common question prospective pilots ask is: “Why do I need theoretical knowledge? Isn’t flying a plane just about flying?” The answer lies in ensuring safety, legality, and performance limits for both the aircraft and the pilot. Ground studies provide the necessary understanding to plan and navigate flights effectively.

Regulatory Framework

Within the EU and the UK, aircrew regulations govern the licensing process:

  • EU Regulation: No. 1178/2011
  • UK Regulation: Retained EU Regulation No. 1178/2011

These regulations are divided into various annexes covering requirements for aircrew, cabin crew, training organisations, and national authorities. Our focus here is on Annex 1: Flight Crew Licencing (Part FCL), which includes subparts from A to K, covering licences from light aircraft pilots to airline transport pilots, including specific ratings and requirements.

Relevant Subparts for PPL

For PPL, we focus on subparts relevant to:

  • Light Aircraft Pilot Licence (LAPL)
  • Private Pilot Licence (PPL)

These subparts address both rotary (helicopter) and fixed-wing (aeroplane) aircraft, acknowledging the differences in principles of flight, operational procedures, performance, and general knowledge.

Theoretical Knowledge Subjects

When studying for the PPL, you will cover several subjects:

  1. Air Law and ATC Procedures
  2. Operational Procedures
  3. Meteorology 
  4. Human Performance
  5. Principles of Flight
  6. Aircraft General Knowledge
  7. Navigation

Although Part FCL does not prescribe a specific order for studying these subjects, some natural synergies exist:

  • Air Law and ATC Procedures with Operational Procedures
  • Navigation with Flight Planning and Performance

Studying these pairs together or consecutively can enhance understanding.

Study Duration and Techniques

There is no mandated minimum number of study hours for PPL theoretical knowledge, unlike the ATPL. However, each subject typically requires 10 to 15 hours of study, totalling around 90 to 135 hours.

Creating a Study Plan

Having a structured study plan is crucial. Here’s a suggested approach:

  1. Initial Read-through: Get a general idea of the material.
  2. Detailed Reading with Notes: Take detailed notes on the second read.
  3. Review and Highlight: Go over your notes and highlight key points.
  4. Lesson Quiz: Attempt the quiz at the end of each lesson.
  5. Progress Test: After completing a section, take the progress test to reinforce learning.

Integrating Theory with Practice

For PPL, theoretical studies can be done alongside practical flight training. For example, studying stall principles before practising slow flight and stalling in the air reinforces both theory and practice.

Exam Preparation

Exams are crucial for proving knowledge acquisition. Utilise online question banks to practice different types of questions. Develop a strategy for answering questions efficiently during the exam, such as tackling easier questions first to build confidence and save time for more complex ones.

Exam Validity and Resits

You have 18 months to complete the nine required exams for LAPL or PPL, starting from the end of the month in which you took your first exam. If you fail any exam, you can resit it up to four times. Failure to pass after four attempts requires retaking all exams.

 

Understanding and preparing for the theoretical knowledge requirements is a critical step in your journey to becoming a private pilot. Utilise the resources available, create a structured study plan, and integrate your learning with practical flight training. Most importantly, aim to thoroughly understand the material, as this knowledge ensures your safety and competence as a pilot.
