How do Pilots Handle Turbulence?

For the frequent flier or occasional traveller, the experience of turbulence can range from a mere ripple in the journey to a moment of heightened anxiety. Yet, for those in the cockpit, turbulence is a familiar companion, and pilots undergo extensive training both physically and theoretically in their ATPL courses to ensure they can skilfully navigate through the bumps and jolts that might unsettle their passengers.

Understanding Turbulence

Turbulence is the result of irregular atmospheric conditions, often caused by changes in air pressure, temperature, or wind patterns. Pilots categorise turbulence into different types, including light, moderate, severe, and extreme. Each category demands a specific response from the flight crew.

 

Pre-flight Briefing

Before take-off, pilots receive a comprehensive weather briefing. This includes information about potential turbulence along the planned route. Armed with this data, pilots can make informed decisions about altitude adjustments or route changes to minimise the impact of anticipated turbulence.

 

Altitude Adjustments

One of the primary strategies employed by pilots to mitigate turbulence is changing altitude. If turbulence is anticipated or encountered at a specific level, the pilot may opt to climb or descend to find a smoother air layer. Pilots communicate with air traffic control to request altitude adjustments as needed. On medium to long range flights, an aircraft will normally be planned to fly above the weather but it can be experienced in the climb and descent.

 

Clear Air Turbulence (CAT)

Clear Air Turbulence, often encountered at higher altitudes in cloudless skies, poses a unique challenge. Since it’s not associated with visible clouds, pilots rely on weather reports, turbulence forecasts, and reports from other aircraft to anticipate and navigate through CAT.

 

Seatbelt Sign

Passengers are often reminded to keep their seatbelts fastened during the flight in case clear air turbulence is experienced and the seatbelt sign is illuminated when turbulence is expected or encountered. Pilots prioritise the safety of passengers and crew, and the seatbelt sign serves as a precautionary measure to ensure everyone is secure during turbulent conditions.

 

Weather Radar and Detection Systems

Modern aircraft are equipped with sophisticated weather radar systems and associated turbulence (thunderstorms); however, CAT cannot be detected by the weather radar.  Pilots use the weather radar to identify and navigate around areas of turbulence. The real-time data allows them to make timely decisions to enhance passenger comfort and safety.

 

Pilot Communication

Pilots are in constant communication with air traffic control and with each other through radio communication. Sharing information about turbulence encounters or providing updates on smooth air patches allows pilots to make informed decisions based on the experiences of other aircraft. Moderate and severe turbulence must be reported to ATC and windshear is also reported but the type of aircraft is also given with the windshear report; severe windshear experienced by a DA42 will not necessarily be severe for an A380.

 

Experience and Training

Pilot training includes extensive coursework on meteorology, aerodynamics, and aircraft handling in turbulent conditions. Flight simulator training further hones a pilot’s ability to respond effectively to turbulence scenarios. Experience plays a crucial role, and seasoned pilots draw on their accumulated knowledge to navigate through turbulence safely.

 

Aircraft Design and Certification

Aircraft undergo rigorous design and certification processes to ensure they can withstand various weather conditions, including turbulence. Manufacturers conduct extensive testing to verify the structural integrity and aerodynamic stability of aircraft in turbulent scenarios.

 

Avoiding Thunderstorms

Thunderstorms are a significant source of turbulence, and pilots actively avoid flying through or near them. Weather radar and forecasts assist in identifying areas of thunderstorm activity, allowing pilots to plot routes that minimise the risk of encountering severe turbulence associated with convective weather.

 

Weight and Balance Considerations

Maintaining the proper weight and balance of the aircraft is essential for stability. Pilots assess the distribution of passengers, cargo, and fuel to ensure the aircraft’s centre of gravity remains within specified limits, enhancing its ability to handle turbulence.

 

Calm and Confident Communication

During turbulence, pilots maintain a calm and confident demeanour in their communication with passengers. Clear and reassuring announcements are made to keep passengers informed about the situation and the actions being taken to ensure their safety.

 

Predictive Wind Shear Systems

Wind shear, sudden changes in wind direction and speed, can contribute to turbulence. Modern aircraft are equipped with predictive wind shear systems that provide advanced warning to pilots, enabling them to make timely adjustments to avoid or minimise its effects. Airports also have windshear detection equipment to warn of potential problems when landing and taking off.

 

Monitoring and Reporting

Pilots routinely monitor weather conditions and turbulence reports from other flights. They provide updates to air traffic control and receive relevant information from fellow pilots, contributing to a collaborative effort to enhance safety in the skies.

 

Post-flight Debriefing

After the flight, pilots engage in a post-flight debriefing where they discuss encountered turbulence, weather conditions, and the effectiveness of strategies employed. This collaborative feedback loop contributes to ongoing learning and improvements in turbulence handling techniques.

 

Turbulence is a natural aspect of air travel, and pilots are well-equipped to handle its challenges. Through a combination of technology, training, experience, and strategic decision-making, pilots ensure that flights remain as smooth and safe as possible, even in the presence of atmospheric disruptions. For passengers, understanding the meticulous measures taken by pilots to manage turbulence can instil confidence and make the journey through the skies a more reassuring experience.
